FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who needs life assurance, who needs a UK endowment? Anyone who has dependents, more importantly where the individual has a young family. Life assurance is also often a condition required when taking out a mortgage - avoid where possible to use the lenders own insurance policy as this is often not the cheapest available. Take a UK endowment as an example. An endowment policy is designed to pay out a cash sum on a specified date. If however one should die before that specified date, the cash sum would be paid out immediately and not on the specified date on when the policy was originally taken out. Equal amounts or premiums are paid throughout the specified period with the final cash amount (maturity value) depending on the performance of the fund that it participates in. (to see an explanation on funds see the home page). Since an endowment is actually a form of savings and investment a policy holder may stop the payments before the maturity date and withdraw a reduced cash sum. The endowment policy may also be sold, or it could remain in force after payments have ceased and thereafter pay a reduced sum on the endowments maturity date. In the past if a policy holder wished to surrender ones policy the only option available was to obtain a surrender value from the issuing life endowment office. The surrender value, even when the endowment policy was very close to its maturity would be considerably lower then the actual maturity value of the endowment policy. It is now possible in the United Kingdom to sell the policy to a company that specialises in this area resulting in the policy holder to obtain a far higher payout than the surrender value that they have been given.

What medical evidence is required? This largely depends on why the assurance is taken being taken out, what the age of the insured will be and on a number of factors like whether the individual smokes, their weight, their height to name just a few.

What about AIDS? In certain cases, depending on the risk group an individual maybe required to complete a supplementary questionnaire on "Lifestyle", where AIDS is potentially a greater risk.
